Goblin Portraits

Overview

This is a collection of head shots of humanoid (goblinoid) faces created via the ArtBreeder (StyleGAN and BigGAN) web application. The faces tend to be green skinned, have pointy ears, and other exaggerated features. The dominant style is photo-realistic, and the images also tend toward illustrative or caricature. See below for a written list of visual cues. These portraits are meant to depict goblins.

Most of the images are 512x512, though some are larger. All of the images are square (equal height and width). To standardize size, resize all to 512x512.

In the folder gob64 are 64 pixel sized versions. They have the same name as the larger images with "-64" prepended to the file name (before the extension). For example: 3c50d996bf2f6b4d23d9-64.jpg

What is a Goblin?

The term "goblin" encompasses a wide variety of fantastic creatures. While I am using the term in manner generally centered upon the Dungeons and Dragons or magical fantasy genre understanding of the word, the word describes a mutable cultural construct and the community populating the dataset (ie, artbreeder) empowers individual creators to tag their creations as they see fit.

In the study of folklore the term goblin has at times been expanded to include a variety of creatures from non-Western traditions that are seen to be "goblin-like" by Western scholars.

> A goblin is a monstrous creature that appears in the folklore of multiple European cultures, first attested in stories from the Middle Ages. They are ascribed various and conflicting abilities, temperaments and appearances depending on the story and country of origin. They are almost always small and grotesque, mischievous or outright malicious, and greedy, especially for gold and jewelry. Similar creatures include brownies, dwarfs, duendes, gnomes, imps, and kobolds.

Note that these may be contradictory, as "goblin" refers to a broad and mutable set of mythological humanoid monsters. Something can be described as looking like a goblin if it has some of these features; it needn't have all or even most of them.

Skin Tone

• green skin
• grayish or greenish skin that is oddly-textured
• skin tone and texture somewhere between that of a human and a snail
• mottled skin tone
• skin color ranges from yellow through any shade of orange to a deep red
• dirt stained skin and clothing
• skin may appear greasy or oily

Ears and Nose

• sharp facial features that might be described as fey or beautiful if they were not exaggerated
• ugly and/or grotesque

• heads disproportionately large for their (small, slender) bodies

Hair

• likely to have black hair

• unlikely to have blond hair
• unruly hair

Eyes and Brow

• oversized eyes
• undersized eyes
• prominent frontal bone over the eyes
• deep set eyes
• heavy brow
• brow covered with thick hair
• decidedly inhuman eyes
• large eyes of a fiery red color
• eyes are usually dull and glazed, varying in color from red to yellow
• small beady eyes

Mouth and Teeth

• sharp teeth

Facial Expressions

Additional notes

The csv is likely to have more data than the xml file. For example, the csv has the gender column fully populated, whereas the same cannot be said for the xml. Sorry!
